Yeharerwerk Gashaw- former model and actor- Light and salt to the world

If in case you haven’t watched the interview of Yeharerwerk Gashaw with the host of Voice of America’s Straight Talk Africa, check it out. Her testimony about how God has been helping her shine in her illustrious career as the first black international model, actor, and how Jesus Christ is the pillar of her life caught my attention and thought sharing the video link with you.

She is from my hometown, Harar, but I’m sharing her interview not because both of us came from that part of the world 🙂

I’m always impressed by Christians like her who are light and salt to the world (Matthew 5: 13 – 16).

Many Christians have lost sight of why they are here on earth at this time and in this generation.

Of course, the overwhelming majority in the world over depend on their natural abilities to serve the world. Though their intention is admirable and many have done great things by themselves alone, they could accomplish more and reach many lives if they tap into their birthright of being the children of the Most High; if they allow God to work with them. Well, this theme is not the main concern of mine as I share this video link. It requires another full article to talk about it 🙂 I’m more concerned about those who claim to be the sons and daughters of God who just settled for warming the pews every Sunday within the four walls of the church alone. What a disappointment to the Lord who wasn’t religious, who was out in the world where people were hurting.

The litmus paper of being the true follower of Jesus is being a change agent and serving the world based on one’s purpose and using one’s gifting and talents.

That is why I’m touched by the testimony of Yeharerwerk. Rather than sitting on the sidelines and criticising and blaming the world, she rolled her sleeves up and began serving where she felt God called her.

Her story also touched me because our ministry aims at raising Christians (and also anyone who is interested) who dare to step into the world and be light and salt. These kinds of Christians aren’t religious and they don’t condemn the world around them and act self-righteous. They love the world because the Father so loved the world, He sent His only begotten Son (John 3: 16). They serve the world according to His calling since they know that that is how they will be judged; not because they know tones of scriptures, dressed in certain ways, and due to the fact that they are members of a certain denomination. Their fulfillment is based on discovering, and pursuing their purpose, the very reason why He released them into this gigantic and finely tuned universe. They are obedient to His calling as they said yes to His assignment in their generation. They are all in… What about you?

Remember, even Jesus who had all kinds of excuses to depend on His abilities said: “It is the Father, living in me, who is doing his work.” (John 14: 10) That means, your age, gender, educational background, eloquence, and so on doesn’t matter that much. What is expected from you is the willingness and dedication to be His vessel in the area where He called you. Then, have faith in the one who dwells in you since He is capable to do the work by Himself. Of course, whatever you do, don’t do it because it attracts attention, fame, and wealth. Do it because you LOVE Him. If you love Him, you obey Him (John 14: 15). There is no greater obedience than responding to the reason of your existence- the very reason why He released you to this world at this time. Of course, if you Love Him, you love even your enemies. And, the best expression of love is serving others according to your calling and using your gift and talents.

Moses attained purpose-oriented greatness (excerpt)

…Think about those great ones you admire. Write down the names of five of your great ones. If you take time and reflect, you could be able to find out, at least, two things in common. They:

  • Discovered their unique purpose, and
  • Willing to die for the purpose they discovered.

Let me quickly give you some diverse examples of great ones who attained purpose-oriented greatness.

  1. Moses

Moses is the greatest prophet who ever lived. “Probably no person in history has been so widely admired as the great Hebrew prophet Moses.”[i] He is popular among Jews, Christians, and Muslims around the world. For that matter, the founder of Islam, Muhammad “recognized Moses as a true prophet.”[ii]

He was supposed to die the moment he took his first breath. Pharaoh issued a fatal decree. Pharaoh ordered: “Every Hebrew boy that is born you must throw into the Nile, but let every girl live.” (Exodus 1: 22)

His mother concealed him for three months, but finally, she couldn’t hide him any longer. He was weaned prematurely and thrown into a river full of deadly beasts. The daughter of Pharaoh found him and adopted him as her own son. He lived in the palace and was groomed as a prince. Unbeknownst to them, they equipped him to handle his future purpose (Exodus 2:1-25).

When he was forty, he sensed his purpose of delivering his fellow Israelites from bondage. He actually took action toward that end. He killed an Egyptian who mistreated a fellow Hebrew (Exodus 2: 12). You know the rest of the story. What he had done came out in the open. He had to flee and spend the next forty years in the wilderness.

When he was still in the desert and tending sheep, at the age of eighty, Moses was sent to deliver the Israelites from bondage. “So now, go. I am sending you to Pharaoh to bring my people the Israelites out of Egypt.” (Exodus 3: 10) This was his unique purpose.

Moses was committed to his purpose. He was willing to die for it. He confronted the leader of the then superpower country and demanded the release of Israelites. Since he discovered his purpose and demonstrated unwavering commitment to pursue it, Moses attained a purpose-oriented greatness. As a result, he became the greatest deliverer in history and left a legacy…
